The course makes an informative session that all staff will be able to benefit from. It is aimed at low to medium risk businesses, that need to provide their staff with an introduction to using hazardous substances in the workplace. This course is ideal for new or existing employees and is aimed at employees and supervisors who require an introduction to, or a refresher on, the use, storage and handling of hazardous substances.
Format and Duration:
This is a 3 hour instructor led classroom course delivered in your workplace to meet your minimum legal requirements. This session involves an introduction to the basic principles of using and assessing hazardous substances safely. It includes an introduction to hazards to health and to the environment, as well as exploring best practice and COSHH risk assessment. It introduces delegates to the law and where to seek practical guidance for best working practise. The course encourages delegates to ask questions and seek answers to questions they may have. - The impact of hazardous substances on people, the environment and your business
- What can go wrong when exposed to substances
- COSHH Regulations – introduction to and requirements of UK law
- Exploring Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) also known as SDSs
- Typical control measures used when working with hazardous substances
- Substances in your workplace and the COSHH Risk assessment process
Learning outcomes
By the end of this session delegates will be able to identify potential hazardous substances in the workplace and the processes used to assess them. They will be able to identify what support is available.
The course will assist your staff to complete their work in a more professional way. There is the opportunity to discuss and work towards solving typical risk assessment problems. It will provide staff with essential skills, confidence and awareness to know when they are working safely and challenge unsafe conditions.
Prerequisites
None required but work that involves the use of substances would be an advantage.
